Class Update

Dear Class:

I hope you have had a great weekend. Just a note to let you know that you should read the article on Lagos, Nigeria, by Monday's class. Also, I have posted the Cultural Geography slides, as well as the Urban Geography slides.

Finally, your third assignment will be handed out in class today. I am really looking forward to this one! Unfortunately, I am not done grading your second assignments yet, so you will have to wait another day for those. See you later this afternoon!

All the best,

Ian

Lost Tribe Photographed in Amazon

Hi Class,

I just posted the reading you should do for Monday. Sorry it took so long to post. But it is a page turner! So I know you will be able to get through it by Monday.

Above is a picture taken by the Brazilian government of an Amazon tribe that has never come in contact with the outside world. Fascinating! They are aiming their bows at the airplane as it takes pictures. Please read the article below (or click here) about why the Brazilian government is worried about this tribe. There will be a quiz on this short article on Monday to make sure you read it! It is only six or seven paragraphs long.

Best,

Ian

Humans Almost Went the Way of the Dinosaurs

Here is a link to the story on how humans almost went extinct. I was right -- it was 70,000 years ago. They explain how it all works herein. We were down to approximately 2,000 of us, unfortunately. They toughed it out, though, and now we are up to 6 billion!

Fox News, CNN, and basically every major news source also have stories dealing with this; so I'm not making it up. This is a British newspaper, which normally gives more details than the television news here. Enjoy!

Assignment for Next Wednesday

Hint, this is somewhere in Europe.

For Wednesday, please do the following:

Read the article posted on the right from the New Yorker Magazine on carbon counting.

Write 1-2 pages, double-spaced, explaining:
  • What you think about global warming and its ramifications on society and nature;
  • What methods (political, social, or economic) might be useful for slowing down human-caused global warming.
  • Which reading (de Blij or the article) or film ("An Inconvenient Truth") was most interesting to you? Why?
This article is a bit different from the other readings you have done. However, it is a very realistic development -- that prices will change and be going up on goods depending on their "carbon costs." It is one answer to stave off global warming. Do you think it will work? We will discuss on Monday or Wednesday.

Have a great weekend and read outside if you can! It's beautiful out!

Best,

Ian

New Picture above... good luck!
